Some memories from Grandpa Vern... Lee and I picked him up and we took him to Staples for a new shredder because Staples gave a Senior Discount. He was being so funny, I don't remember the things he said but I just remember the feeling of laughing a lot! On the way out of the store he HAD to buy lee and I these little pig hard drives and it was so cute. So I got it and that pig and I were NEVER meant to be together! Haha That pig went on a swim in Lake Mead 40 feet down and then was found. Then a week later I found the pigs butt in the middle of the parking lot and I have never found the head :( but that pig's bumb always gives me a laugh! Then we went to the Chocolate Cottage and he LOVED chocolate dipped cherries and that is the ONLY thing he wanted. Come to find out, he put them in the freezer and found them later and started to laugh. After our day of fun, when it came time to go we said our goodbyes and he became so sad to the point of tears when we left. Ha cute old man attached to his grandkids!
This is the dream board my grandpa made for me! I took him a cork board and he made a wooden frame that I painted black to fit perfectly! I also have a box to keep my treasures in that he painted green :)
This is a tool he made...two in one..rake and shovel. Ha always thinking...
Goofy guy!
HA funny memories of Grandpa and picking out the best Jazzys at the store. Costco has the best ones!
HA g-pas picture he always drew..
This is an oldie!Well I wrote down things to remember him:
-Putting a squeaky dog toy underneath the couch cushion so when people sat down it made an awful noise and he would chuckle.
-He found a plastic egg that look VERY real and he would drop it in front of people so they would get panic. Aunt Ruthie put it down the disposal.....ha
-He was always excited for us to come, but sad to see us leave.
-Beautiful garden! Tomatoes and Strawberries :)
-Light the cannon on the 4Th of July.
-Climbed in his apple tree.
-Coolest wood shops in his backyard.
-Walked EVERYDAY! and picked up coins. Dumpster dove in the carwash garbage.
Always tinkering with something, always fixing things.
-Always busy with a big heart.
-Found things with the metal detector.
-Called me a broomstick or dixie chick.
-Teased me about riding a Yamaha because it was Forgien made.
-High pitch beeper that he would point that the barking dogs.
-Made perfect Outhouses..Toilet Paper and everything.

Vernon Joseph Stiel"Stainless"May 25, 1925 ~ Jan. 14, 2012
Vernon Joseph Stiel died peacefully on Jan. 14, 2012 at home, which was his desire. He never wanted to be a burden to his daughters and after 8 years of life without his sweetheart, it was enough. He was born on May 25, 1925 in Benson, Minnesota to Fred and Theresa Douvier Stiel. He was the fourth of seven children. His parents and 2 brothers, William and Charles, preceded him in death. Dad grew up on a farm in rural Minnesota where he learned the ethics of work. He served his country proudly and honorably in WWII, serving in the Caribbean Theater. As he grew up he had three dreams: to play football, be a police officer, and attend the FBI Academy. With his limited education, he didn't know how he could ever possibly fulfill those dreams. With Mom's never ending commitment to Dad, he was able to fulfill all of those dreams...and more. He met his eternal companion, Shirley Johnson, in Provo, Utah and they were married on August 25, 1949 in Provo and later sealed as an eternal family in the Salt Lake Temple in 1957. He attended BYU in 1950 and played football for Coach Chick Atkinson. In 1958, he was hired as a fulltime patrolman and served the City of Orem for 10 years, becoming the first lieutenant ever of the department. He took photographs of all of Utah county fatalities and was an expert fingerprint witness. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family and even found time to tinker with his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He loved to ride and even appeared in a BYU film production with his bike. He left Orem City in 1967 and went to work for the Utah Department of Public Safety in Salt Lake City as a fingerprint analyst. He quickly moved up in the department and became the Bureau Chief of Criminal Identification. He was instrumental in creating the first Crime Lab for the State of Utah and was very proud of that accomplishment. He attended the FBI Academy in 1975, at the age of 50 and had many wonderful experiences while there. One of the students at the academy remarked to him "Stiel, I don't know how old you are but I hope I am in as good of shape when I'm your age." After Mom died, rather than giving up, he stretched himself and enjoyed many experiences, including a church history tour and a cruise to Alaska. He loved working in his wood shop and would spend hours there. His wood shop has been referred to as "the shop of charity" by ward members. He was an active high priest in the Crescent 3rd Ward. His posterity includes 4 daughters, Ruth Ann (Earl) Tervort, Marilyn Ingraham, Elaine Jackson and Teresa (Bill) Brunt and neighbor-daughter, Dawna Holm. Along with his girls, his 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren were his greatest joy. He loved having them come to visit him and was sad to see them leave. They all love their "Gpa". He is also survived by 1 brother, Edward (Jean) Stiel, San Benito,Texas and 3 sisters, Louise Waage, Catherine Voorhees and Marie Isler, all of Minnesota. He was also loved by numerous nieces and nephews. The family expresses their deep appreciation to Dr. Richard Bennett who stated, "Vern knew how to live and knew how to die" and to Hearts for Hospice and the wonderful volunteers who served our Dad with love and compassion. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 at the Crescent 3rd Ward, 949 East 10600 South. Viewings will be held from 6-8 pm on Tuesday evening at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State Street and 1 hour prior to the services, at the church. Interment, East Lawn Memorial Hills, 4800 North 650 East, Provo, Utah.

ReplyDeleteOh Lynsie!! I wrote my poem but haven't posted pictures. I was driving back to Lehi to get the boys and a random thought came that I have to call dad and see how he is doing today....yikes. I have learned the meaning of bitter/sweet. Happy for him but sad for me but really happy for me. Yeah. Go figure. I cherish the memories! Every single one of them. I loved my last shopping spree at best buy with him. So precious. He will live on in all of us!!
